What is Responsive Web Design?
The main purpose of responsive design is to have only one site, but with different elements that respond differently when viewed on devices of different sizes.
When a traditional website is viewed in tablet which has small screen as compare to laptop or desktop computer then it is difficult to see all the elements in website or to view whole elements in website one should scroll it horizontally which is quite irritating.
On a small smart phone display it is even more challenging to view whole website and the site can be slow while loading the whole page if it is graphically heavy.
However if the site uses responsive design then tablet version automatically convert the site into two columns which makes the site easily accessible and easy to navigate.
On a smart phone it might appear as a single column so that user can simply swipe up the site and view other elements also. Images will resize itself instead of getting cut off.
The summary is: with responsive design, the website automatically adjusts itself based on the device the viewer sees it in.
